Doctor’s Hospital Named One of Top 100 Hospitals of 2013

February 26, 2013

Of the 100 hospitals selected as the nation's highest-performing acute care hospitals, one in every 10 is an HCA facility, as determined by Truven Health Analytics’ “100 Top Hospitals: Benchmarks for Success®,” an annual survey.  Now in its 20th year, the list recognizes 100 high-scoring hospitals from a field of 2,922, based on measures of overall organizational performance including patient care, operational efficiency, and financial stability.
“HCA’s 100 Top Hospitals recipients make us proud, not only for the work they’ve accomplished during the survey period, but for sustaining superior performance. They are providing the highest quality care, in the safest and most efficient manner, maintaining top financial stability, while being rated well by their patients. This performance ultimately goes beyond being list-worthy, as each facility shares best practices for the benefit of all hospitals,” said Jonathan B. Perlin, MD, PhD, MSHA, FACP, FACMI, President, Clinical and Physician Services, and Chief Medical Officer.

From its 100 Top Hospitals roster, Truven also compiles an annual list of Everest Award winners, a subset of hospitals that have also met a national target for rate of improvement over five consecutive years. Doctors Hospital of Sarasota and Lakeview Hospital are among the 17 Everest Award winners for 2013.

Truven identifies each year's 100 Top Hospitals by analyzing publicly available claims data from the Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) dataset, the CMS' Hospital Compare database and Medicare cost reports. Eligible hospitals are divided by size into five categories: major teaching hospitals, teaching hospitals, and large, medium and small community hospitals.

Within each of those five categories, hospitals are evaluated against their peers on 14 measures, such as 30-day mortality for heart failure, inpatient expense per discharge, complications and patient experience. To make the 100 Top Hospitals list, hospitals must rank above their peers on a composite score of all 14 measures and must also score above the median for each measure.

Bradenton Herald by Herald Staff Report
February 1, 2013

Blake Medical Center Friday was officially designated a Level II trauma center by the Florida Department of Health, the hospital has announced.

The move makes the Bradenton hospital the only designated trauma center in Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto counties.

"This designation is a culmination of the extraordinary work by our team of physicians, nurses and other clinicians and our shared goal of providing the best possible trauma care to the residents of Manatee, Sarasota and DeSoto counties," said Daniel Friedrich, president and chief executive officer of Blake Medical Center.

The announcement culminates a three-and-a-half-year certification effort, a news release said.

Before Blake opened its trauma unit in 2011, critically ill and injured patients in Manatee, Sarasota and DeSoto counties had to be airlifted to Tampa or St. Petersburg.

The Joint Commission Includes 96 HCA Hospitals on List of 620 Top Performers

71 Percent of HCA’s U.S. Hospitals Included on Joint Commission Top Performers List

Nashville, Tenn., September 19, 2012 – HCA (NYSE:HCA), one of the nation's leading providers of healthcare services, today announced that 96 of its 135 licensed affiliated hospitals are included among The Joint Commission’s list of Top Performers on Key Quality Measures™ program for 2012.

The 620 hospitals on the list represent the top 18 percent of Joint Commission hospitals reporting core measure performance data for 2011.

Nashville-based HCA comprises 162 hospitals and 112 freestanding surgery centers in 20 states and England. HCA’s 156 U.S. hospitals operate under 135 licenses because, in some cases, more than one hospital may operate under a single license. (Please see the attached list of HCA affiliates on The Joint Commission’s Top Performers list.)

Hospitals on The Joint Commission’s list met the following criteria: First, the hospitals achieved performance of 95 percent or above on a single, composite score that includes all the accountability data for which it reports data to The Joint Commission, including measures that had fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients. Second, the hospitals also met a 95 percent performance threshold for every accountability measure for which it reports data to The Joint Commission, excluding measures with fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients.

“We are proud of our nearly 200,000 employees and 35,000 affiliated physicians whose contributions ensure HCA is continuously striving to attain and sustain clinical excellence. Top Performers recognition is based on nationally comparable accountability measures of delivered clinical performance, not opinion surveys,” said Dr. Jonathan B. Perlin, HCA’s Chief Medical Officer and President of the company’s Clinical and Physician Services Group.

“The measures are based on the scientific evidence about the practices that lead to better patient outcomes in areas such as heart care, pneumonia, surgery, and childhood asthma,” said Perlin. “The 2012 results reaffirm the dedication to evidence based care and positive patient outcomes that is shared by our physicians, nurses and other caregivers during 20 million patient encounters annually.”
